Dr. Roth Featured in L.A. Parent Magazine

The July issue of L.A. Parent magazine (on newsstands June 22nd ) will feature an excerpt from Choosing the Right School for Your Child by Dr. Brandi Roth and Dr. Fay Van Der Kar-Levinson. The article discusses the readiness of your child for that ever-important “First Day of School.” The authors, both psychologists, educators and consultants, developed the book as a companion book to Secrets of School Success: Guiding Your Child Through a Joyous Learning Experience. Both books are available in local bookstores and on www.amazon.com

PROBLEM SOLVING FRAMEWORK

Step 1
PAST
Step 2
PRESENT
Step 3
FUTURE
Dilemma:
What happened?
 Analysis:
Total behavior symptoms:
How do you feel now?
What are you thinking now?
What are you doing now?
What are your body sensations?
 Action:
What can you do next?
Accountability plan:
Apologize
Make a new choice
Change a behavior
Take responsibility
Self evaluate

Multiple steps may be necessary to reach a creative plan for a more effective solution. Use the following five steps to open the dialogue for communication and discussion:
*    Agree by talking over the dilemma and making a plan
*    Agree to disagree
*    Postpone and come back to discuss at a set time in the future
*    Reach a compromise
*    Use a mediator

Remember to use the "L.A.S.T." Rule when self evaluating:
*    L     Listen actively watching for facial expressions and emotions.

*    A     Accept the 10% that you do not like or agree with and tolerate the differences in viewpoints listening for perceptions, needs and quality world pictures

*    S     Speak only for yourself and accept responsibility for your action

*    T     Tell the truth
